The Home Stretch Part 1: Roar into Retirement

"Reg makes people laugh while talking about things that are usually pretty uncomfortable!"

Corey Gish – Estate lawyer, Lacombe, Alberta.

You’ve built your farm empire – now what? If you ask a typical farmer what retirement is they would likely say “I want to stay on the farm as long as I can, eventually get rid of the headache of management stress, but stay active until I die!

The concept of retirement is designed for people who work 9-5 jobs with the goal of retiring at 55. But what if you like what you are doing and don’t want to quit?

Do you want to retread-refurbish-renovate or re-invent yourself? Have you thought about how you are going to live until you die? Retirement means different things to different people, but retirement planning is ignored and overlooked in our work discussions. We distract ourselves from the heavy lifting, the stuff around the heart that needs to be addressed. Reg has learned and taught about this tricky subject within his own family.

"Do it now – you are going to be dead a long time"

- Walter Billey, Reg’s father-in-law who passed away suddenly at the age of 63

"I am not going to do everything that I am going to do so that I can get a job and sit around so that I can retire early and sit around!"

- Teagan Shandro, Reg’s oldest son, age 21
